the Quirky Inventor

alan turing was absolutely amazing, no doubt…

anathematic:

but it pisses me off a bit when people call him the “father of computer science”.

just for the record, lady ada lovelace, the first programmer, was born 97 years before him, and grace hopper, another prolific computer scientist, was born 9 years before him.

most certainly give respect where it’s due (and a lot is due to turing, both for his genius and for the atrocities visited upon him), but please stop forgetting and ignoring women’s contributions to science.

The ADA programming language is named in honor or Ada Lovelace.

ADA was developed by the US Department of Defense in 1975 as reliable programming language for safety critical systems. The Military Standard reference manual was approved on December 10, 1980 (Ada Lovelace’s birthday).

In the 1980s - 90s ADA was widely used in military and aviation. The Ariane 4 and 5 rockets as well as the Boeing 777 fly-by-wire systems are programmed in ADA.

ADA is still in active use today although it’s popularity is declining. For cost reasons the DoD and NATO switched from expensive custom developed tools to cheap, commercially available, market proven components.
